The Kirkbymoorside Surgery is a four partner practice based in the town of Kirkbymoorside which is a forty minute drive door to door from York District Hospital. The practice has 6,100 patients spread over a rural area covering almost 200 square miles. The practice covers the three beautiful dales of Bransdale, Farndale and Rosedale to the north, extends to Helmsley in the west, Pickering in the east and Slingsby in the south.
The Primary Health Care team is the nucleus of the practic. The District Nurses and Health Visitors and Midwives are based within the practice and there are regular meetings with the MacMillan nurse on palliative care matters. There is a team of four Practice Nurses and two Health Care Assistants and an administration and reception team of eight staff. Meetings occur once a fortnight with the clinical team and once a fortnight with the management team. The GP registrar becomes a member of the team and will have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of practice life.
A wide range of additional services are provided within the practice. There is a practice based Physiotherapist and Podiatrist, and a Primary Health Care Mental Health Worker for adults and for children based in the practice. The Orthotics Department and Dieticians regularly visit the practice to see patients.
Every effort is made to investigate and work up patients within the practice to avoid patients having to travel elsewhere. There is Minor Surgery, joint injections and the full range of contraceptive services.
There are two trainers within the practice. Tim Hughes has been a trainer for fourteen years and has a special interest in Musculoskeletal medicine, and is a GPSI in this field for the Primary Care Trust. He is an Educational Supervisor on the York scheme and a GP Appraiser. Jackie Lodge has been a trainer since 2009 and has a special interest in women’s health issues.
Rachel Hodgson and David Powell are the two non-trainer partners but are very much involved in the training. James Fielding also has an interest in Musculoskeletal disorders and General Medicine. Rachel Hodgson has an interest in Women’ s Health matters and a background in Rheumatology. They both have responsibility for supporting the medical student teaching and training for the all of the Hull - York medical students who attend the practice in their fifth year.
As a training practice all members of the team are involved in supporting the GP trainee in becoming a GP. The nature of the location and practice population means that trainee has a very wide experience of medicine and acute illness in a primary care setting.
Kirkby Moorside, and the surrounding countryside, is beautiful place. The distance on the map belies the relatively short time it takes to travel. The doctors and their families commute back and forth to York on a regular basis and it is not an onerous journey. Visits to view the practice are welcomed - just telephone Dr Hughes.
