Post Details:

Jorvik Gillygate Practice was established in 1947, and over the years has seen much change with regard to staff and geographic location of surgeries. For many years one of the surgeries was on Peckitt Street a stone’s throw from the River Ouse. The practice regularly flooded and patients were to be seen wearing their wellingtons. This was the first practice in North Yorkshire to implement an appointment system and employ a practice nurse.

There are now two surgery sites providing primary care for 19,500 patients across the city (having merged with Gillygate Surgery in 2014). Some of the patients registered before the NHS was established. There is a purpose built city centre surgery at Woolpack House on the Stone Bow, and a surgery on Bishopthorpe Road near the old Terry’s site.

There is a long commitment to GP training, having been involved in training since its inception. As a training practice all the doctors are involved in supervising trainees. The GP trainers are Dr David Fair and Dr Monica Smith at Woolpack House and Dr Ben Shorten and Dr Vanessa Barrett at South Bank Medical Centre.

The practice is also involved with HYMS teaching with 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th year students attached to the practice and mentoring of FY2 doctors, and Physicians Associates.

A loyal skilled team of reception and administrative staff is led by a dynamic practice manager Mrs Wendy Stevens. Primary care is provided by a team of GPs, nurses/health care assistants, practice pharmacists.

The GPs at the practice are:

· Dr David Fair has been a GP trainer since 1998, and is also a clinical assistant in psychiatry and a part time prison medical officer.

· Dr David Hartley joined after life as a single hand practitioner on East Mount Road, he is a member of the LMC and expert in practice finance and interested in medical politics. He mentors the PA’s.

· Dr Julia Alexander is an expert on contraception and respiratory disease, and mentors HYMS5 students

· Dr John Locket is a qualified occupational health physician and an expert in diving medicine.

· Dr Tony Pegrum was a registrar at the practice many moons ago and liked it so much he decided to stay, he supervises 5th year HYMS students and PA’s.

· Dr Ben Shorten acquired his MRCP on route to becoming a GP and has been a trainer at the practice since 2010 and also supervises HYMS5 students.

· Dr Vanessa Barrett, joined the practice in 2014 , having been a trainer and Programme Director in Doncaster since 2005. She has interests in women’s health/contraception/dementia and is the practice Safeguarding Lead.
