GP Journey - A Summary

So you want to be a GP?

  • A National three stage process governs recruitment to GP training.
  • You will find the details of the process in an Applicants’ Guide on the National Recruitment Office for General Practice Training (NRO) website. This site provides information and advice relating to eligibility, training options and frequently asked questions and is a “must visit” for all applicants!

  • Opportunities for Less Than Full Time Training: Successful candidates appointed to Yorkshire and the Humber Postgraduate Deanery are able to apply for Less Than Full Time Training. The Yorkshire and the Humber Postgraduate Deanery has a number of trainees training flexible/less than full time.

Before you can apply

You need to have:

  • A recognised primary medical qualification.
  • A UK GMC certificate at the time of application OR passed both parts of PLAB and be eligible for UK GMC registration at time of application.
  • Completed a 2 year Foundation Programme or be able to demonstrate foundation competencies - this is a very complex area and you must see http://www.gprecruitment.org.uk/ for exact details of the level of proof that you need to show.
  • Defence organisation membership.
  • Satisfactory references, criminal record and occupational health checks.
  • A current valid Driving License or give evidence of proposed alternative as a means of providing emergency and domiciliary care.

The three stages of recruitment are:

Stage 1- Long Listing

Applications are long listed for eligibility using the entry criteria as shown in the Applicants Guide.

Stage 2 - Short Listing

Successful candidates are invited to a second stage Selection Centre to test your medical knowledge and to assess your ability to cope with complex medical and ethical scenarios. If you make the mark, you are then you are invited to stage three.

Stage 3 - Selection Centre

All UK GP Deaneries have adopted a Selection Centre approach to General Practice Specialist Training Programme (GPSTP) recruitment. The Deanery has been using a selection centre approach for the last three years. Candidates have found the process to be transparent and fair and feedback has been very positive.

Candidates will take part in four exercises, which are:

  • A Written Exercise
  • 3 Patient Consultation Simulations

The patient consultation simulation may be video taped or recorded on audiotape for training and/or quality control purposes. There may also be additional observers in attendance for training and/or calibration purposes.

Remember, you are applying for GENERAL PRACTICE. You need to show:

Enthusiasm for General Practice

What do you like about it? Why are you good for general practice? (as opposed to general practice being good for you) Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years? What do you know about the current status of general practice? How do you see the future of general practice - the opportunities vs. the threats?

Adaptability to Change

You must be able to show that you are accepting of change and that change can have good and bad consequences. Can you give an example of how you reacted to an impending change at work?

Personal & Professional Development

You should be able to demonstrate reflective practice in your current work. You should be able to justify your views with reference to the evidence surrounding it. Remember, learning is not just knowledge; it’s about a change in skills and attitudes too. How do you assess your own performance at work? Is there anything you have done recently which you feel you could have done better or differently? How do you keep up to date?

Awareness of your own limitations

Awareness of your own limitations and when/where to seek further help. How do you cope with stress at work? What do you do when you are inundated with so many tasks at work?

You should be:

Patient centred

Able to justify your approaches based on critical evaluation of evidence from various sources (which may include ethical principles) and show a respect for life.

A good team player

After all, this is what general practice is all about. Can you give an example of how you have worked well in a team? What elements were essential for successful team working in that instance?

Allocation of places on training programmes to successful candidates

Candidates who can show they have good enough competencies to be able to train to be independent GPs in a three year programme are placed in rank order according to their scores at the selection centres. Yorkshire and the Humber Deanery will take as many of these successful candidates as they have vacancies for, offering the highest ranking candidates places on training programmes.

There may be some candidates who have shown their competencies are suitable for GP training but Yorkshire and the Humber Deanery may not have enough vacancies to place them on training programmes. These candidates may be able to find vacant training programme places in other deaneries where there is a surplus of vacancies. This clearing process is handled by the National Recruitment Office for General Practice.

Candidates who are appointed to training programmes in Yorkshire and the Humber Deanery will be offered their choice according to their ranking by selection centre scores, unless they have applied for geographical restriction on where they can work. Our Geographical Choices policy allows appointed candidates who otherwise would suffer considerable hardship with their training to ask to work only in a certain area.
