Study Leave (Details)

As part of your training needs you may wish to attend courses including those on Family Planning, Minor Surgery and Child Health Surveillance.

It is imperative that you plan these courses, so that they can be fitted into your study leave allocation for every six months. It will not be possible to cram them all into one six month post or for you to carry study leave over from one post to another.

The VTS receives a budget from the Deanery each year for study leave, and in order to share this fairly among the GPSTs, we do need to review each application before deciding on approval.

When applying for study leave, please apply not less than six weeks prior to the intended date of study leave.

Expenses can not be reimbursed after the event if prior approval has not been obtained.

GPSTs in General Practice

Study leave allowance is granted under the terms of the GPST-Trainer contract.

Study leave allowance should be granted with reference to the following principles:

  • GPSTs are encouraged to develop a coherent and relevant study leave plan early on in training and to request leave in accordance with these plans.
  • Study leave “is not an entitlement but an allowance and the needs of patients must always take precedence”.
  • “The total of half day release and study leave granted to each trainee should be a maximum of 30 days per year”, i.e. the number of days out of the practice for attendance at a half day release when added to the number of days allowed for study leave should not exceed 30 days.
  • Requests for study leave over and above the minimum should be dealt with on their educational merits with due consideration to the educational needs of the individual GPST.

GPSTs in Hospital Posts

Study leave will be granted in accordance with paragraphs 250-254 of the Terms & Condition of Service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff and the Terms & Conditions of Service for Doctors in Community Medicine and the Community Health Service.

Study leave allowance should be granted with reference to the following principles:

  • The total of Whole Day Release and study leave granted to each trainee should be a maximum of 30 days per year, i.e. the number of days at a Whole Day Release when added to the number of days allowed for study leave should not exceed 30 days.
  • GPSTs are expected to attend the Whole Day Release programme every month.
  • Study leave should be planned well in advance in a personal development plan.
  • The study for which leave is taken should be considered in the context of the entire GP training programme and not necessarily restricted to the specialty in which it is taken.

In the event of a dispute arising over study leave, GPSTs and Trainers are advised to consult with the Programme Directors and/or the appropriate Associate Director. If local resolution cannot be achieved, final arbitration will be the responsibility of the Director of Postgraduate General Practice Education.

Study Leave for those in LTFTT

From 1stAugust 2018 there will be a minor change in York to

· the allocation of study leave and

· the organisation of the HDR system to move in line with what happens elsewhere in Yorkshire.

Two main changes will occur:

1. LTFT trainees are allowed study leave in proportion to their percentage LTFT. A full-time trainee is allowed 30 days study leave per year or 15 days per six-months. Therefore a trainee working 60% LTFT will be allowed 9 days study leave for a six month period. The total study leave allowance INCLUDES time spent at whole day or half day release sessions.

2. For the last number of years, Group B trainees (those in ST1 or ST2 who are in GP) have been attending all HDR sessions in addition to the full day of teaching every month. In future, to move in-line with HEE policy, from 1stAugust 2018, they will attend ONE FULL DAY AND TWO HALF-DAY teaching sessions at the post-grad centre every month. Therefore there will be one week per month where they will be required to work in the surgery rather than be present for a HDR session. This will be clearly indicated on the HDR timetable when it is published on the VTS website.
