The Yorkshire Assessment Package

St William's College, York

The Yorkshire Assessment Package

This is separate from certification and the Summative Assessment package, which is the prerogative of the JCPTGP. The Yorkshire Assessment Package (YAP) was introduced a number of years ago, to provide GP Registrars with feedback of their performance relative to their peers on the scheme and thus allow them to establish their strengths and weaknesses. It has always been a formative assessment.

The YAP comprises

1. Formative Multi-format Knowledge Test in all Specialties, including General Practice

This is an MCQ test of not only factual knowledge but also application of knowledge. The papers are marked positively only.

There are two sorts of MCQs - the Formative MCQ, which is not an examination, and this is to give the Trainee individual feedback of strengths and weaknesses compared to peers. The Summative MCQ, where performance is marked as pass or fail, occurs at the end of the GP year in Practice. Both are marked centrally at Regional level.

2. Assessment of Consultation skills -

This is based on GP Registrar video consultations in General Practice but we have been one of the regions to pioneer the use of actors as “simulated patients” and this has now been translated as an alternative to the Video in Summative Assessment.

3. Assessment of Clinical Competence -

This is based on performance in post, and results of objective structured clinical examination (OSCE).  The OSCEs are done in the first six months of the first General Practice attachment.  They consist of a number of stations designed to assess clinical competence. Examples include breaking bad news, explaining laboratory results, examining the eye etc..  The results are fed back to the GP Registrar at each station, and for their personal use only.

4. Checklist and Logbook -

This comprehensive logbook is gradually completed by the GP Registrar during the course of the three year scheme.  It contains evidence of ongoing experience. a personal education plan  and acts as an on-going learning diary.  It is an ideal start for a Personal Development Plan for later use in revalidation once the GP Registrar becomes a principal.

5. Rating scales -

These are used throughout the training period to help feedback progress to the individual GP Registrar, and are conducted by the Trainer in each post.
