Once a year there is an Annual Yorkshire Postgraduate Medical Education Event - the Summer School, which is open to all GP Registrars currently on the VTS schemes in Yorkshire This consists of a five day course, run in early September each year. There are a variety of Subschools, each dealing with a specific area of interest. The GP Registrar can choose to enroll onto the subschool which is the most relevant to his/her current needs. During a three year rotation, a GP Registrar can expect to attend two to three Summer Schools.
Previous Subschools have been - Research in General Practice Medical Ethics and General Practice The Dynamic Body Counselling Management in General Practice How to do a Project Research in General Practice
As well as offering a marvellous opportunity to take a week out of every day practice to study a particular subject in detail, the Summer School experience doesn't end here. There is a lot to be gained by mixing with colleagues from different parts of the region, comparing ideas and learning from each others' experience.
This is a residential course, with
accommodation on site paid for by the Deanery. Traditionally, the Summer
School has been held at the Ripon Campus of the University College of York and
Ripon St John. From 2002, the venue changed, and it has been held on
the attractive campus of York University.
Each year we take advantage of the resident Course Organisers and their Resources to run a series of Master Classes in the evening. These include a variety of interesting subjects, ranging from a Concert to a Tutored Wine Tasting. In addition, there is a Course Dinner one evening, followed by a Disco, to allow a bit of relaxation.
