Overview

The Strensall Medical Practice evolved from a small single-handed practice in the 1930’s to a 11-partner practice in October 2003.

Strensall Surgery

The Practice covers a large area of approximately 200 square miles to the north and east of York. We encompass the suburban areas of Huntington and New Earswick, numerous large commuter villages such as Strensall, Haxby and Dunnington, a rural centre in Stamford Bridge and numerous small rural settlements such as those at Sheriff Hutton and Sutton on the Forest.

At the present time our list size is around 16,500 and growing

We have four surgeries.  The main surgery is in Strensall and was completely rebuilt in 2000, with branch surgeries in Stamford Bridge, Huntington and Dunnington. We are part-dispensing at all sites to a total of nearly 3500 patients. Dunnington is our only surgery that doesn’t open every weekday morning and afternoon.

Stamford Bridge Surgery

The lead partner, Peter Burnett was a member of the local PCG from inception until its transformation into the PCT. He is a member of the local LMC sub-committee along with Lesley Welch, who is also a GP appraiser. The Practice is a major site for the teaching of medical students from the new Hull York medical school, Mark Stenton and Russell Saxby being involved in this activity.

We work closely with our integrated District Nursing and Health visitor teams and we have on-site NHS podiatry, speech therapy and physiotherapy at various surgeries. We have our own phlebotomist and run monthly liquid nitrogen cautery sessions as well as the usual minor surgery and other clinics.

Training

The Practice recently took the decision to become a training Practice and has 2 enthusiastic new trainers, Lesley Welch and Chris Hirst. This has been seen as a positive move for the Practice by all the partners who have been very supportive. Initially we are taking one registrar, based at Strensall, but we are just about to embark on a complete re-building scheme at Stamford Bridge (Spring 2004), which will see the surgery double in size and enable us to take a second registrar.

IT

We have been essentially paperless since 2001 and rely entirely on the computer for recording consultations.

We have networked PCs throughout the practice, which give access to clinical and administrative systems, the practice intranet and well as the NHS Net and the wider internet. The local PCT and acute hospital have advanced plans for an area-wide network of all health providers which we will be linked to.

The practice uses the windows-based Torex Synergy clinical software and we are linked to the Health Authority for Registration and IOS, and to York District Hospital for Pathology results.

All incoming correspondence is scanned on arrival and stored and work-flowed using the Docman document management system. Our appointment system is Frontdesk for Windows.

On Call

The Practice has been a member of NYED, the local out of hours co-operative since its inception in 1996. On call commitments for the partners  entail about 3 sessions a month with a similar requirement for the registrars.

The Team

We are forward thinking and like to think of ourselves as friendly and enthusiastic. We are a large practice and feel that we are able to offer a wide variety of General Practice experiences.
