Map of the York VTS Region

There are a large variety of different practices available, giving experience in Urban, Rural Dispensing or Semi-urban practices. There are large Group Practices and small Practices, those working from privately-owned premises and those based in Health Centres and dispensing and non-dispensing Practices. Some Practices have an attached community hospital. This allows GP Registrars to choose the Practices that most suit their individual needs.

There are 16 different practices in the York VTS.  The majority are in the immediate area of York itself, varying from central city practices to dormitory/suburban practices.  While there are two in the Cathedral town of Selby, which is South of York and another in the attractive small market town of Market Weighton, nestling in the shadow of the Wolds, some 20 miles East of York.

All the Practices firmly believe in providing comprehensive medical care within the framework of a fully-integrated Primary Health Care Team and offer full support for the elderly, chronically ill and psychiatrically ill patients within the community. Some Practices continue to offer full Obstetric intrapartum care.

The individual Practice population largely determines the nature that this workload takes within the Practice. Consequently, there is some variation in the members, and their skills, within each Practice team.

The GP Trainer for each Practice is responsible for the majority of the teaching and co-ordinates the timetable of the GP Registrar. Most Practices are now Teaching Practices and as such offer teaching from other partners in the Practice. This additional teaching usually reflects the special interests or expertise of the other partner involved.
