Gale Farm Surgery

The Practice works from two cost rent buildings and looks after patients from all walks of life. Gale Farm Surgery in Acomb has 9500 patients and The Old Forge Surgery in Poppleton has 3600 patients. Both buildings have purpose built GP registrar accommodation, are fully computerised and provide complete medical services.

The practice has a close knit primary health care team with attached health visitors, district nurses and midwives. The practice provides its own counselling, physiotherapy, dietetic and chiropody services. Our practice nurses give support to health promotion campaigns as well as running clinics for the management of asthma diabetes and coronary heart disease. We do a large amount of minor surgery, cryosurgery and joint injections and provide full contraceptive services. We organise our own in house continuing medical education and actively participate in audit.

The practice has a very strong commitment to GP training and medical education. Dr Bush has been a trainer for 16 years and now spends time supervising FY2 trainees. He is also the FY2 GP co-ordinator for North Yorks and East Coast foundation training School. Dr Bell Syer has had registrars for10 years and Dr Anderton has been training since 2003. As well as training, the trainers regularly participate in the teaching sessions on the half day release scheme. The practice also has experience in overseeing GPR summative assessment: Dr Bush is a National assessor for consultation video tapes and Dr Bell Syer marks audit projects. The trainers are also involved with commitments outside the training scheme. Dr Bell Syer is a GP mentor. Dr Bush is a facilitator at York’s biannual minor surgery course. and represents the Yorkshire Deanery in matters concerning PRHOs. Dr Anderton is a member of the Local Medical Committee and oversees practice prescribing. Gale Farm Surgery also has a large teaching committement with HYMS teaching blocks of 3rd and 5th year students and providing educational supervision to 5th year students.

The Old Forge Surgery

The GP registrars gain a wide range of experience by working at both Gale Farm Surgery and Poppleton, which is part dispensing. Each registrar will be assigned to a specific trainer although all the practice helps with training. Most of the teaching will be on a one to one basis, but group teaching can be arranged if it is beneficial to the registrars.

Some registrars are able to spend a year in the practice - the first six months as a full time registrar, then the next six months doing General Practice and Palliative Care in conjunction with St Leonard's Hospice.

Registrars get experience of on call duties within the practice during the day and out of hours helping the doctors in the pratice that do OOH work

A furnished self contained flat is available at The Old Forge Surgery for any registrar who wishes to use it.
