Additional Qualifications and Courses The GP Registrars are encouraged to sit exams for higher qualifications, according to their future needs. Traditionally, there has been large number who sit MRCGP and we are proud of the 85% pass rate, averaged out over recent years, which is higher than the national average.
The GP Registrars revising for their MRCGP examination are encouraged to form an MRCGP Tutorial Group. The Course Organisers are happy to advise on this and arrange special sessions - such as Vivas. There are regular MRCGP preparation courses, which the GP Registrars are encouraged to attend.
Most GP Registrars sit the DRCOG exam, which has had a 100% pass rate over recent years. Some GP Registrars sit the DCH, though it is generally felt that six months experience alone is not sufficient, and it is more usual for those interested in DCH to gain some additional Paediatric experience and then sit the exam after leaving the scheme.
Induction Course All GP Registrars commencing their first six month post in General Practice attend an induction course at the attractive conference centre at Rudstone Walk, situated in the gently rolling countryside of the Yorkshire Wolds, overlooking the Humber. Here, they are introduced to Video consultation analysis, Learning Styles and the essentials of General Practice in the relaxing setting of an old farm.
Family Planning GP Registrars can obtain their Family Planning Diploma during the three year period, by gaining experience and knowledge from their two GP attachments and from the local designated Family Planning clinics if wished. There are two opportunities each year to attend a Family Planning course at the Postgraduate Centre.
Minor Surgery Twice a year there is a very popular Minor Surgery course, which offers a combination of good theoretical grounding and plenty of opportunity for practical experience using pig trotters. This is run by two GP Trainers, experienced in Minor Surgery, a consultant Dermatologist and a GP Surgeon in the Postgraduate Centre.
Child Surveillance There is a Child Surveillance course run twice a year, which offers a good mix of practical and theoretical developmental Paediatrics.
